The HVACR Training Authority

About Us

Since 1933, Refrigeration Service Engineers Society (RSES) has been a leader in training and education for professional HVACR technicians and contractors.

RSES was launched in an era when the small commercial and domestic refrigeration industry was in its infancy. At that time the only training available was through the factory and it typically lasted three or four weeks. Those who completed the factory training were now considered a “factory-trained expert.” The majority of work was conducted by product dealers, distributors, or factory service departments. As more installations were done the need for independent service operators increased and the need for collecting, distributing, and exchanging ideas and information became paramount. It was through the untiring efforts of these independent service operators that RSES was born.

Though the scope and range of the industry has grown exponentially since then, RSES has remained dedicated to delivering technical information to HVACR professionals under a single vision and mission:

Vision Statement

To be the definitive industry leader in all segments of the HVACR industry by providing superior educational training.

Mission Statement

To provide opportunities for enhanced technical competence by offering comprehensive, cutting-edge caisse a outils complete and certification to our members and the HVACR industry. To advance the professionalism and proficiency of our industry through alliances with other HVACR associations.

RSES, a 501©(6) membership organization with members in chapters in the U.S. and Canada, with additional technicians routinely using its training material in 50 countries across six continents.
RSES is the leading education, training and certification preparation organization for HVACR professionals. RSES publishes various comprehensive industry training and reference materials in addition to delivering superior educational programs designed to benefit HVACR professionals at every stage of their careers through instructor-led training courses, online training for HVAC, educational seminars, interactive CD and DVD products, industry-related reference manuals, and helpful technical content through Service Application Manual chapters, the RSES Journal, the RSES Journal archives and feature articles, as well as web-exclusive features.

Beginning with basic theory and extending to complex troubleshooting, training courses covering refrigeration and air conditioning, heating, electricity, controls, heat pumps and safety may be conducted in a classroom environment or though self study. RSES publications may be purchased by schools, contractors, manufacturers or any other industry group wanting to conduct comprehensive training programs. Seminars covering air conditioning troubleshooting, electrical troubleshooting, compressor training, condenser training, refrigerant piping practices, DDC controls, and more are held in various cities across North America.

Select training programs offer Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and NATE Continuing Education Hours (CEHs).

In addition, RSES offers industry certification preparation materials for refrigerant handling (EPA Section 608), R-410A and North American Technician Excellence (NATE) examinations.

RSES’ monthly magazine, RSES Journal, serves HVAC contractors, service technicians, students, operations/maintenance managers, engineers and technicians who work in the residential, light commercial, commercial and institutional markets on air conditioning, warm-air heating, refrigeration, ventilation, electrical, ice machines, chillers, hydronic heating, piping, refrigeration control and energy management, building automation, indoor air quality and duct cleaning, and sheet metal fabrication equipment and/or systems.

RSES eLearning - Made possible through the generous support of the R.W. KELLOW CENTER OF LEARNING

R.W. “Bill” Kellow, CM, was a visionary leader of RSES. During his tenure as president of RSES in 1980–1981, he sought to create a school for HVACR service professionals. Following his death in 1992, a generous contribution sparked numerous donations to the RSES Educational Foundation Center of Learning Fund, and the fund was rechristened in his name in honor of his vision and dedication.
Although a school was never built, RSES embraced the concept of “bringing the classroom to the student” by offering seminars at local RSES chapters nationwide. With the launch of RSES eLearning in 2008, Bill’s vision has been expanded further. The classroom can be wherever the student is. HVACR professionals worldwide can now access renowned RSES training anytime, anywhere!

Webinars

Improve skills with the RSES Webinar Series, designed to augment RSES’ many other in-depth training programs, webinars feature industry experts presenting on a variety of topics. Hydrocarbon Training Program

RSES Leads Industry

RSES has led the industry with the first Hydrocarbon Training Program for HVACR technicians to safely maintain and service systems utilizing flammable refrigerants. Since 1933, RSES has been a leader in training and education for professional HVACR technicians and contractors.

Effective Training for Hydrocarbons

Hydrocarbons are naturally occurring gases that make good refrigerants. HC refrigerants perform very well, with good capacity and efficiency. They are available for a wide range of applications and have a very low environmental impact in comparison with CFCs, HCFCs, and HFCs. Finally, they are compatible with copper, standard mineral oils, and other common system components.

Even though service procedures for HC refrigerants are similar to those used with other refrigerants, additional safety considerations must be taken into account and proper training obtained to reduce hazards.

Who Needs Training?

Any HVACR technician working on HC refrigerant systems needs to make changes in their service and maintenance procedures and should be trained to safely handle HC refrigerants.

Refrigerants Covered

The Hydrocarbon Training Program covers practices for the following refrigerant families:
HC R-290 (propane)
HC R-600a (isobutane)
HC R-441A (a blend*)
HC R-170 (ethane)
HFC R-32 (difluoromethane)
*R-441A, also known as HRC 188C, is a blend made up of 3.1% ethane (R-170), 54.8% propane (R-290), 6.0% isobutane (R-600a), and 36.1% butane (R-600).

About NATE

What or Who is NATE?

North American Technician Excellence (NATE,) headquartered in Arlington, VA., was founded in 1997 and is the nation’s largest non-profit certification organization for heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration technicians. NATE is the only technician certification organization governed, owned, operated, developed and supported by the HVACR industry.

NATE’s certification tests represent real world working knowledge of HVAC and HVACR systems and candidates can earn installation and/or service certification in one or more specialty areas. NATE certification tests are developed by the NATE technical committee. The NATE technical committee is comprised of industry experts who developed and oversee NATE’s Knowledge Areas of Technician Expertise (KATEs). Each exam is developed based on these knowledge areas of expertise. The technical committee represents a wide variety of perspectives including contractors, educators, manufacturers, and utilities. Members also are diversely spread throughout the country.
How are RSES and NATE Affiliated?
RSES supports having a single examination/credentialing body to measure technical competency within the HVACR industry - as such, RSES is one of the many industry organizations that endorses and promotes NATE certification within the HVACR industry.

RSES and NATE have a unique relationship in that NATE does not provide any training or preparation materials for their examinations – although they do strongly recommend that technicians prepare! RSES, as a training orginazation, offers several programs to help technicians prepare to get NATE certified and maintain that certification.

What areas can a technician get NATE certified in?

There are currently 21 NATE installation, service, and senior tests. Specialties include:
Air Conditioning, Air Distribution, Heat Pumps, Gas Furnaces, Oil Furnaces, Hydronics Gas, Hydronics Oil, Light Commercial Refrigeration, Commercial Refrigeration, and Senior HVAC Efficiency Analyst.

Where can I get training and/or take the exam?

RSES and many of its Chapters are official testing and training organizations of NATE. We offer both specific training programs and NATE’s complete family of tests for service technicians and installers, and the specialties under the HVACR umbrella.

Training and testing for NATE certification is conducted through the local RSES Chapters. View the RSES Events Calendar to find scheduled exams in your area or contact your local Chapter to obtain testing date and location information in your area.

You may also find more scheduled test dates and locations directly through NATE. Click here.

Need more information?

For further information on NATE training products, programs, or testing schedules please call RSES headquarters at 800/297-5660 or 847/297-6464, or e-mail us at certification@rses.org.

Membership

Q: Why do chapters and Headquarters charge different amounts for new incoming members?
A: There are 165+ chapters worldwide. Each chapter individually determines its dues amount, based on the level of value it provides to its members. This implies more than 165 possible dues variations, therefore International charges an average direct membership amount of $128.00.

Q: How long does it take to access the RSES website after signing up for membership?
A: The whole process takes roughly about a week. After Headquarters receives a new member application, and the dues payment is processed, a welcome packet is created and mailed to the individual. Within the packet, among other things, is an ID card. This ID card provides the individual with their membership number, which is required for full access to the RSES website. If a new member needs website access faster, they should contact RSES by phone or e-mail and we’ll provide their ID number in the same manner.

Q: If there is no active chapter in my area what happens?
A: When there is no chapter or the chapter is simply not active, a couple of things can happen. If there is no local chapter, you (as an active member) have the ability to create one. Should you be interested in creating a chapter, you or someone from headquarters needs to contact the Regional Director in that area and ask their permission. Once approved, Headquarters mails you a packet with the full details of how to make this happen.

Similarly, if the local chapter is not active, you can reactivate it by working with the Regional Director and Headquarters. Volunteers are the lifeblood of RSES, and you too can be part of a proud leadership legacy.

Should you not be interested in creating or reactivating your own chapter, headquarters simply just directs you to the nearest alternative chapter.

Q: I have moved and never changed my chapter, how do I do that?
A: You would need to contact the Membership Department at 800/297-5660 and they will be able to transfer you to a new chapter.

Q: How do I create an online account?
A: An account has been automatically created for all members of RSES unless you have previously chosen your username and password. If you would like to obtain your information, please e-mail general@rses.org or call us at 800/297-5660.

Training
Q: I lost my EPA certification card. How do I get a replacement?
A: We will be happy to assist you in obtaining a replacement of your certification card; please note that there is a $15 charge for this service.

There are three easy ways to obtain a replacement of your certification card:
1.) You can request a replacement card and pay the fee by credit card online by using our secure and convenient online processing form.
2.) You can mail a check or money order to RSES Headquarters using the Replacement Certification Card Processing Form.
3.) You can contact our office at 800/297-5660 x2338 and the fee can be paid directly over the phone by credit card.

When ordering a replacement card be prepared to provide your name, certification ID number, your current address and a telephone number where you can be reached during the day should any further information be needed.

Q: Is having an RSES certification card the same as being a member of RSES, or does it automatically make me a member?
A: No. RSES is approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to administer the Section 608 Certification program which is open to all individuals involved in the HVACR industry regardless of being a member of RSES, so being RSES CFC certified does not automatically make one a member of RSES.

Q: What is a CM, SM or a CMS?
A: Certificate Membership (CM), Active Specialized Member (SM) and Certificate Member Specialist (CMS) are classifications of RSES membership. Exclusive to RSES members, these designations are earned after successfully passing rigorous written examinations.

Q: How do I sign up/participate in an RSES training course?
A: Training courses are scheduled and conducted by the local Chapters of RSES. You can contact the RSES Chapter nearest to you to find out what courses are being offered in your area, where they are being conducted, and the fee for the course. To find a local Chapter in your area visit Locate Chapters/Associations.

If the local Chapter is currently not conducting any courses or if they are not conducting the course you wish to take, you may wish to consider participating in the course by self-study. Each training course RSES offers can be taken by self-study.

To review the list of courses currently available by eLearning, visit www.rseselearning.org.

Q: When do I get my training course certificate?
A: Once you complete a training course and obtain a passing grade, your training course certificate is mailed to your Chapter/course instructor. Follow up with your Chapter approximately 2-3 weeks after completing your training course exam.

Q: How are NATE exam certificates handled?

Q: How do I open the CBT3 Residential Split-System Cooling: Mechanical Refrigeration Troubleshooting R-22/R-410A CD?
A: Once the CD has been installed on your system:

• Open “My Computer”
• Open the CD Drive which should say “RSES Mech Refrig”
• Open the folder R22R410A
• Once the folder is open scroll to the bottom of the page and look for the “Main” Icon. It is a brown RSES logo.
• Right click the main.exe icon, it is the first icon and select copy
• Minimize everything until you get to your desktop
• Then right click the mouse and click paste shortcut
• The program will now be accessible from the shortcut placed on your desktop.

Q: I’ve received an error when trying to install the CBT3 CDs, what do I do?
A: Below are the errors that have occurred and the solution:

Error #1 - C:\Winnt\System32\config.nt The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose ‘Close’ to terminate the application.

Error #2 - config.nt The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose ‘Close’ to terminate the application.

Error #3 - C:\Windows\System32\Autoexec.nt The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose ‘Close’ to terminate the application.

The user will be prompted to quit the program or ignore the error message, either selection makes the program quit.

Solution #1 – Step 1, go to the hard drive (in most cases, C drive) and open Windows folder. Step 2, find a folder called “Repair” and open it. Step 3, find a file called “Autoexec.nt” and copy it (you can do this with a right mouse click and then select copy). Step 4, go back to Windows folder and find the folder called “System32” and open it. Step 5, paste “Autoexec.nt” file here (again, this can be done with a right mouse click and then select paste).

Solution #2 - In some cases people might not have a “Repair” folder in their Windows file. In this case they can go to http://www.visualtour.com/downloads/ and download a file called “XP_FIX.EXE”

This program will reinstall the missing or corrupt Windows XP system files command.com, autoexec.nt and config.nt.

The file should be downloaded and saved it to the desktop or another location where it can be found. Double click on the file to run it once it’s downloaded. If problem reoccurs in the future, simply re-run this program.

Q: I’m having problems with a few of the CDs I purchased from RSES, is there a page that will help me troubleshoot my problem?
A: The RSES Technical Institute HVACR Training Manuals: Interactive CD-ROM Edition, CBT3, Reciprocating and Scroll Compressor Test Procedures, HVAC SuperTech and HVAC Personnel Assessment were created with the software program called ToolBook. “Fixes” for some of the most common questions that people call and ask about can be found on at ToolBook – Frequently Asked Questions.

MSAC/MSAC Hotline

Q: Why hasn’t my question been answered?
A: Because Members of the MSAC work on a voluntary basis with RSES/RSES Journal, their time is limited. The RSES Journal Staff works with individual MSAC Members to get questions answered in a timely fashion, but this depends upon their schedules.

Q: I received an answer to my question, but when will it appear in RSES Journal?
A: Due to limited space for space, only one page has been devoted to MSAC Hotline each month, which only leaves room for a couple of questions/answers. The number of pages will fluctuate as the total number of pages for the magazine does. Be patient…there are many questions/answers that will be published, it may take some time though. The best way to find out when yours will be published is to contact the Associate Editor.

Q: Can I search older MSAC Hotline columns by topic?
A: RSES Members and RSES Journal Subscribers have access to all of RSES Journal’s archives. Make sure you are logged in and visit RSES Journal’s Archives. RSES Hedaquarters Staff is constantly working to improve the search capabilities of the Web site. If you are looking for a specific question/answer that you know appeared in an MSAC Hotline column, contact the Editor for help.

Q: How do I submit a question for MSAC Hotline?
A:
Several methods are available, but all questions should be submitted using the MSAC Hotline Question Card. Pre-postaged Question Cards are included every other month in RSES Journal (January, March, May, July, September, November 2010). You may also submit a question electronically using the MSAC Hotline Question Card.

Q: How long does it take to receive an answer to my question?
A: While a time frame for a returned answer cannot be guaranteed, the Staff tries to attain an answer within three weeks. However, due to the back log of questions received and the limited time MSAC Members can devote to answering questions, answers may take longer to receive. Contact the Associate Editor for specific information about your question.

Q: Who are the MSAC Members?
A: Click here to view a list of companies that are presently represented on the MSAC.
